Mythology Distillery Releases Syrah Finished Whiskey

Mythology Distillery will release a wine barrel finished whiskey on May 22 at the distillery. Mythology Distillery aged its award-winning Hell Bear Whiskey in a syrah wine barrel from Dominio IV Wines, a boutique winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, an esteemed wine region known for its world-class syrah and pinot noir.
Syrah-Finished Hell Bear Whiskey encompasses sweet notes like sweet blackberry jam, warm baking spices, cinnamon shortbread cookies, vanilla, and rich chocolate. The variety of sweetness on the nose gives way to flavors of chocolate-dipped raspberries, mulled wine, cinnamon spice, clove, brown sugar and leather. The whiskey finishes with a lasting taste of caramelized cherries, fresh mint and subtle molasses. 
“We received the wine barrel three days after the wine had been transferred, still wet and coated in exceptional syrah,” said Scott Coburn, head distiller at Mythology Distillery. “This allowed us to maximize the wine’s flavor in the final steps of aging the whiskey. This is a one-of-a-kind spirit that we believe is a really unique offering in the market.”
Coburn worked closely with Dominio IV Winemaker Patrick Reuter to decide which wine to use for the collaboration, eventually selecting the big fruit flavors of the syrah to complement the spice of the rye whiskey. After the selection process, the whiskey was aged in the wine barrel for seven months. 
“It’s not every day that a distillery gets the opportunity to collaborate with an acclaimed winery like Dominio IV Wines,” said Scott Yeates, founder of Mythology Distillery. “We were really able to come together to create an exceptional offering that highlights the wine as well as the whiskey. We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.”
The special release will be available starting May 22 for $85 each. Mythology Distillery recommends enjoying the whiskey neat in a rocks glass. Customers can purchase and enjoy the specialty release at the Highlands-based distillery & cocktail bar (3622 Tejon St, Denver, CO 80211) as well as select liquor stores, restaurants and bars.
